So Kerry Got Me Thinking

First of all, I know at least 5 of you who are going to roll your eyes when you read this. . . I know, I know, you think I'm just overly sensitive about this stuff. But here's the thing, I'm not sensitive ENOUGH, and I'm planning on changing that.

So, what am I talking about?? Go check out Kerry's post Enough is Enough. I'm talking about racism. . . about how even if we aren't overtly racist, we are all guilty of letting it perpetuate. I know that I ignore far too many comments, generalization, and jokes than I should. Well, I not going to from now on. (Again, I *know* you are rolling your eyes!)

So, here's where I start. I am an Anti-Racist Parent. I make the commitment to raise my children with an Anti-Racist outlook. No, that doesn't mean we ignore differences in people or that we "don't see color". . . no, after all my children won't have that privilege. The world will make sure of that. What I mean is that I am committed to raise my children to have a healthy, realistic view of race. I am committed to raising children that will know that racial slurs and racial stereotypes are made out of hate, ignorance, or both. It means that I am committed to raising children who see people as people.

Interesting idea. I grew up with a racist da, and I know that in the future I plan to raise my kids anti racist as well... though I've never seen that blog.

It'll be interesting to see how others intrepret this.

Good luck!

Krystal,
I am with you in your commitment to be an Anti-Racist Parent! We owe it to our children! - and to the world as a whole- Change has to begin somewhere- so it may as well begin with us!

Amen! Remember the 2 most important commandments... The world would be a much better place if we all just loved each other as we love ourselves. Hate is an ugly thing with ugly consequences.

What a great concept. I am with you. I want to raise Savannah and her future sibling that way too. It is true that we let too much roll off our backs or explain it away and make excuses.
