The Great Gate Escape

Our house has been a "gated community" for a while now. . . but we've run into some serious gate problems this week. The gate below has been up since July or August. It is great -- you step on a little foot pad and push it open with your knee and you kick it closed -- no hands! This has worked great for months, but the problem is the Brayden TOTALLY knows how it works! Once he picks up another pound or two, he'll be out the door!

Now, here is the REALLY big problem. We put this gate up after Parker came home and we realized that sometimes Brayden needs to be separated from the baby -- sometimes as in any time she is in the swing or the bouncy seat and not in complete protection!

We didn't realize that this crappy gate was held together with Velcro until we heard the first little RIP when Brayden figured out that he could just take the thing apart! We tried switching the gate around so that the Velcro was on the opposite side, but as you can see in the video, Bray can still rip it down with one hand! The gate is a Summer Infant Sure and Secure Custom Fit Gate -- do not buy it! I think I'll e-mail Summer Infant and let them know that the gate is neither sure nor secure.

And here is the newest challenge --

We've avoided putting a gate on the stairs b/c I was pg and clumsy and well, we had gates everywhere else! Now we've got to get a gate on the stairs . . . and we've got to find a replacement for the Velcro crappola that we have for the play room -- anybody got any suggestions???

The stairs is a problem for us too. With out big family - the stairs are a high traffic area ALL the time - the kids are beggin for NO gate - I am not sure what to do about the stairs..As far as the gate -The bad thing about them is until you have them up and try them out - it is so hard to know if you like them!!!! Brayden looks so ggo and he is growing so fast! What a smart fella!!!!! I will be asking for lots of pointers soon on doing it all with a wild man around!! I worry about him throwing toys at her - or trying to hug her a little too tight - Make lots of notes to pass on to me!!!I lovved the vidoe - we need more of that - MORE often - :):)

We have a homemade contraption at the bottom of our stairs that my hubby came up with ... and at the top we bought something similar to this ... http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000M0IT9M/sr=1-10/qid=1176291025/ref=sr_1_10/102-4522409-5957712?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core&mqnodeid=16342621
It attaches to the wall and swings out of the way when you aren't usingit. When you do need it there is a metal clasp that is tricky to use, so little hands (even busy, smart ones like Brayden's) cannot do it. My oldest boy only figured out how to do it within the past year or two.

We are just using a cheap gate for our stairs. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2307282&cp=&sr=1&f=Taxonomy%2FTRUS%2F2255957&origkw=gates&kw=gates&parentPage=search

It works pretty good. Alex hasn't figure out how to work it yet. For our other doorways we are using the Summer Infant Sure and Secure Extra Tall Walk Thru Gate. It is also working pretty good. It's not hands free, but you can do it with one hand.

Brayden is just too cute!! And obviously very smart. :)

(make sure you put it all together).

This is to replace the Zelcro gate. Brayden is the cutest little escape artist I ever saw!!!

We have three gates...
we got them all at Target...
one is the expando gate that is kinda flimsy....
but we have two other gates that were a bit more pricey...
but they are great...

one has a little door and it's got an automatic door, you can just press a button on the counter to open... or you can open manually as well...

we have another gate that opens manually... seems to work great and Matthew hasn't figured it out... even if he does it's too hard for his little fingers to open.
He's tring to open or climb over... but for now, it's working.

I love to watch little ones walk - great video. The stair climb was pretty exciting too! We have a gate that we used when we had my brother's dogs. It supported the weight of both dogs putting their front paws on the top. I'll have to look at the brand. It has a door that you walk through also.
